About TV2 International

It all began in the early nineteen-eighties when the Company was asked by Rothmans, the company which sponsored the Porsche World Endurance Championship Team, to install a conventional broadcast camera and video recorder in a works Porsche 956.

This bulky onboard camera system was used to provide broadcasters with a driver’s ‘point of view’ for their coverage of World Endurance Championship, the famous ’24 Heures du Mans’, and the World Rally Championship. Subsequently, in the days when GoPro and other action cameras were unheard of, the Company developed a miniature on-board camera system small enough to provide live images from a racing motorcycle, Formula One racing car, or even a jockey’s helmet.

Over the next thirty years, TV2 has provided broadcasters in over fifty countries with specialised facilities for the the live coverage of motorsport and other events. Of particular note was the 1987 America’s Cup, in Fremantle, where live onboard camera shots from Dennis Conor’s ‘Stars and Stripes’ resulted in the company being nominated for a coveted ‘Monitor Award’.

Profile

David Earl has been the driving force behind TV2 since he founded the Company in the early nineteen-eighties. A close friend once described him a the sort of person he would want to take on a tiger hunt. Certainly, to survive in the world of live television for more than three decades, one needs to have a talent for problem solving and an eye for detail. As David puts it, ‘Bernie Ecclestone is not the sort of man to react kindly to the word ‘can’t’ five minutes before the start of a Formula One Grand Prix.’

Describing himself as a ‘man of many talents but a master of none’, David’s real skill is an inate ability to see the ‘big picture’. Once he understands the problem, he simply brings in a team of experts, and ensures they remain focussed on the project in hand. However, coming from the world of advertising and marketing, David would also describe himself as ‘creative’ – a talent that comes to the fore in terms of some of his video productions.
