Airborne Ground Surveillance & Reconnaissance (AGSR)

‘In many ways, TV2 transformed ‘Command & Control’ by providing decision makers and analysts on the ground with broadcast quality EO/IR images in near real time from sensor platforms mounted on police helicopters, surveillance aircraft, and drones.’

After watching the live coverage of broadcast sports on at home on television those people responsible for law enforcement, security, and intelligence gathering realised they could use the same technology to view near real time images from police helicopters, surveillance aircraft, and drones in their Command & Control Centres…

However, this new market had its own unique challenges, one of which was the need to transmit data over long distances in near real time. One such AGSR (Airborne Ground Surveillance, & Reconnaissance) project involved using ‘intelligent’ high-gain steerable antenna systems at a strategically located ground receive site. This allowed analysts to view EO/IR (Electro-Optical/Infrared) images from sensors mounted on aircraft in separate locations at a ‘line of sight’ range of over 200 kilometres, in near real time. The system, which has recently been upgraded to high definition, has now been in operation for more than ten years.
